ABOUT OUR CLUB - 2010

The Newmarket Huskies are an AAA competitive Track Club, registered with the Athletics Ontario, Ontario Masters Athletics and the Ontario Minor Track Association. We participate in competitive distance running only (800m and up to the Marathon) and race in either track meets (indoor & outdoor), cross country meets, or road racing events.

Our program is about IMPROVING on your own PERSONAL BESTS (PB's) and trying to be the best you can through commitment and work effort. At the same time members get to enjoy the camaraderie of people with similar passions. It is not about winning per se, although it may be a by-product or end result for some.

We have 4 COMMITMENT competitive seasons.

Members must select at least one competitive season from:

o WINTER – January – March. (primarily indoor track)
o SPRING – April - mid June. (primarily outdoor track)
o SUMMER – Mid June – July or early August, if applicable (primarily outdoor track)
o FALL– September – November (primarily cross-country)

o YEARLY - Road racing happens all year long (for Masters)
o REST PERIODS (No official club workouts) – August & December

In general, the EXPECTATION & COMMITMENT that school age members sign up for in a particular competitive season is:

• 2 workouts per week (1 workout per week in winter season) during the training period with some personal absence exceptions. Occasionally, there will be additional ad hoc workouts for selected individuals during the winter competitive season.
• Participation in the Ontario Provincial Age Class Championship for the particular competitive season.

Note 1:

During a competitive season that members do not commit for, they are encouraged to train with their schools (High School or Elementary) to maintain fitness. Club workouts are for only those seasonal committed members in order to maximize coaching effort. This is the only way we can assist members, to not only be competitive, but be the very best they can be.

The cross country season has the additional team commitment. For our teams to be the best they can be we need to know up front who we can count on.

Note 2:

University members generally train full time with schools during a designated University competitive season. However, they usually compete for the club during the summer competitive season in Ontario &/or Canadian XC Championships as time permits.

During a particular competitive season all COMMITTED school age members (High School & Elementary Schools) will have the additional EXPECTATION to participate in their school workouts. WE SUPPORT THAT. Club Coaches try to coordinate with School coaches, as much as possible, to maintain a win/win situation for the individual.

Workouts will always take place RAIN or SHINE. The only EXCEPTION is that we will NOT train when lightning is occurring or conditions are very icy. “There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing”.

Each member has the responsibility to complete their weekly training program on their own when not at either a club or school workout.
